Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov shook off fitness concerns to get off to a solid start to this year’s Australian Open tournament, beating Russian Aslan Karatsev in straight sets of 7-6 7-5 6-2 in the opening round. Dimitrov has been struggling to get back to the promise he showed back in 2018 but injuries have curtailed his progress for the most part. Although his campaign here last year ended in a second-round loss, this remains his most successful grand slam, where four of his six grand slam quarterfinals have come from.
Serbian Laslo Djere ended a 5-game losing streak at this tournament with a 3-1 win over Zizou Bergs earlier this week. The Serbian has struggled to win on hardcourt in his career so getting that win (only his fourth hardcourt win this season) out of the way was a significant milestone that he will be looking to build on.
This will be the first encounter between the two players. Although Dimitrov isn’t quite back to his former self, he is still favored to win here as he is the superior player on this surface.
