World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz eased past Russian Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in Friday’s second semifinal at Centre Court to set up the final the world has been waiting for. Third seed Medvedev seemed to keep pace with the Spaniard to start the match. But from the moment Alcaraz broke his serve for a 5-3 lead in the opening set, he never looked back and wrapped it up with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory in under two hours. He now has a chance to avenge last month’s loss to Djokovic in the French Open final. Unlike that final when he was favored by bookies, he will be the slight underdog here against the Serb who hasn’t lost on Centre Court here in the last 10 years!
Number 2 seed Novak Djokovic had earlier punched his ticket to the final with a straight sets victory of his own over hard-hitting Italian Jannik Sinner. The Serbian won just 10 more games than Sinner but came through almost all the crucial rallies in the game to win 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to his 35th Grand Slam final. Djokovic is bidding to not only equal Roger Federer’s 8 Wimbledon titles but also become the oldest men’s singles champion and match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slams.
This final has all the hallmarks of an instant classic. It is not only a generational battle between the two best players representing the present and the past but also a grudge match, barely a month after they faced off at Roland Garros.
