More info about La Liga
The Primera Division is the highest Spanish Football league. Colloquially, this league is also called “La Liga” and since 2008 the Primera Division has officially been called “Liga BBVA”, which is the sponsor name. The two major clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid (check out our Real Madrid prediction site) have dominated the Primera Division since 2004/05. Barca has won seven titles in this time period, Real ended up on top three times. When Atletico Madrid won the Spanish championship in 2013/14, it was the first time that another club than Barca or Real won the championship since FC Valencia in 2003/04. This year again the battle for the title only involves the two big ones. Atletico Madrid is the only club that is most likely to be able to interfere in the title race.
The playing mode
Since season 1997/98, 20 teams participate in the Primera Division. Here the Spanish champion and the relegated teams are determined in 19 rounds each in the first and second leg. So, in total, 38 rounds are on the schedule. Unlike for example the German Bundesliga, in the event of a tie, the goal difference does not determine the placement, but the results of the direct matches of the teams with the same score. Therefore, the direct duel has a higher priority than a possible better goal difference.
Qualification for Uefa competitions
Spain is placed first in the current UEFA five-years ranking, which means that Spanish clubs have seven representatives in the European Cup. The champion, the runner-up and third-and fourth place finisher are directly qualified for the Champions League group stage. Fifth-place finisher is granted with a starting spot in the UEFA Europa League. The Spanish cup winner (Copa del Rey) is automatically qualified for the Europa League group stage. The sixth-placed team has to enter the Europa League qualification. The three clubs placed last in the championship relegate to the Segunda Division.
