Erik ten Hag’s appointment as Manchester United boss has come with a degree of optimism. The 20-time English Champions have looked lost like Alice in Wonderland in recent seasons, a situation that has seen their expectant supporters increasingly get agitated. All the managers that tried to fill the great Alex Ferguson’s massive shoes have found the going tough and one by one they all ended up on the gallows as the club continued hunting for the right man to steer them back to glory.
Ten Hag’s tenure kicked off on a flying start in pre-season football as the highly rated Dutchman racked off three quick wins including a morale-boosting 4-0 thrashing of the visitors. They will be hoping to replicate some of that performance here as they seek to send a message of their intentions for this season.
Man United finished last season trophyless, and ended up sixth in the Premier League log, which means they have to play in the second-tier Europa League this season. They have had a lot of back and forth about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future in the club with reports suggesting he is not too keen on playing in that competition. It remains to be seen how this will play out but regardless of this, they seem to be having no problems upfront with their lethal attacking led up front by a rejuvenated Anthony Martial causing nightmares to defenses.
The Red Devils have bolstered their squad with a couple of summer acquisitions including Netherlands international Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord who it is thought could have a big role to play in Ten Hag’s system. They also parted ways with some players that were out of contract, including midfielder Paul Pogba who opted to go back to Turin to play for Juventus.
Ten Hag has his work cut out here but despite their challenges on and off the pitch in recent seasons, there is a reason for him and his charges to be optimistic coming into this clash.

Liverpool came so close yet so far in so far as their achievements for the 2021-22 campaign are concerned. What looked like a promising season ultimately ended with a bitter taste in their mouth for them as the promise of a possible quadruple came up just short. They finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League battle that went all the way to the wire before playing second fiddle to Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League, losing to them for the second time in three seasons. Like his opposite number, Klopp has little time to integrate the new blood. He however still has a good number of the winning team from a couple of seasons ago who he can rely on when he goes to battle in Old Trafford where he has had some success in recent times including a comprehensive 5-0 thrashing of United here just last season.
